Paulo Mendes da Rocha, look at his work. The gallery is again below the ground, though the architectural play on shelter, sculpture, theatre/drama and entry are all above. I have more photos if you are interested.
Contemporary art gallery built below ground next to a significant heritage building. Lots of RAMPS! Have more photos somewhere, I will try to find them. Plug it into maps and have a look from the top. An example of getting natural light into below ground gallery.
Stairs go under the book shop to the left leading to a contemporary art gallery.
You walk down stairs below the statue of Artigas to his tomb where his ashes are closely guarded. It is an absolutely spine chilling place. Very unexpected! Google Artigas tomb and you will see some more images.
